about

These are some of my earliest songs that I actually managed to record. I can only play five of these now. These songs were written in and during the few years prior to 1985 (I would have been 19). They were just played and recorded one after the other with no frills by a couple of friends. A few songs that didn't make it and that have consequently been lost forever (my lyric/chord notebooks were stolen while in storage) are Too Much, Can't Get her Out of My head and Life In Toy Town. I gave an audio tape to some friends and family members which included a few songs from this master tape. Namely, Catherine, Magic Dream, It's Only Me, Melt My Mind and Speak Like Summer (my girlfriend's fav at the time). I sent some of those tapes off to record companies in fact! It seemed like such a wasted effort that I never bothered again. Watching You was my response to leaving school, having a few jobs and doing a stint on the dole and not being too impressed with my prospects!

As you can see, however, most of the songs on this album are expressions of youthful romanticism of which I had plenty! Magic Dream, for instance, was written about a girl I met briefly on the train home to Southminster in Essex. She refused my offer to give up my seat for her and promptly vanished without a trace after a few stops! That was in the days when some trains were the old-fashioned commuter type and the carriages contained small compartments. So, it was a very intimate situation with the other passengers participating whether they liked it or not. 'I thought you'd pulled there mate,' said one guy afterwards. No such luck! Haha. But then my best friend always says that this is the song that defines me most because I've always been in love with love itself.
